Rename Case 193

Proposal

Title:

This service claims that your personal data is not being sold

Description:

This service makes the claim that your personal data is not being sold, rented or traded with third parties. This, however, may not always be an accurate statement as it may be, more often than not, based entirely on a very loose legal definition on “selling”, whereas other jurisdictions may actually constitute their sharing of your personal data as “selling”.

Previous Wording

Title:

Your personal data is not sold

Description

This service makes an explicit promise not to sell “personal data” of users.

Reasoning

I’ve seen a fair amount of services claiming that user data is not sold (in quotations, no less, because they rely solely on legal voids, but I digress). After more reading, though, they’d have sections (usually for the CCPA) where they still offer a “Do Not Sell My Personal Information” feature (or similar), without objections to said definition.

This rewording is to make it more evident to the users that this statement is not always to be relied upon.

What are your thoughts?

Yea you make a good point.

However I see more and more points that could be changed this way. Maybe a there is a better bath to make it clear that we simply summarize the words by the service. For example have some “disclaimer” on top of the summary.

Please elaborate, I’m not sure if I got it.

Just read it again, now I get it.

Honestly we should’ve added such disclaimer feature a long time ago. Look at many comments on Phoenix, which complain about missing points on comprehensively reviewed points accross the board (e.g. GitHub). Such disclaimer should give the users much needed information.
